Fatty liver on ruminants: what is it, causes, symptoms, prevention

Fatty liver (hepatic steatosis) in dairy cows is a common and insidious metabolic disorder that can have serious repercussions on animal health and productivity, especially during the transition period (the weeks before and after calving). Hepatic steatosis is characterized by an excessive accumulation of triglycerides (fats) in liver cells (hepatocytes). This condition primarily arises from a negative energy balance, which occurs when the animal’s energy requirements exceed its dietary energy intake. This imbalance leads to the mobilization of body fat reserves, releasing large quantities of non-esterified fatty acids (NEFAs) that flood the liver. If the liver cannot metabolize or export these fatty acids quickly enough, they accumulate, impairing liver function.

 

Consequences of fatty liver

A compromised fatty liver cannot fully perform its many vital functions, which include glucose production, detoxification, lipid metabolism, and protein synthesis. The consequences can be severe:

  • Fertility issues: poor uterine involution post-calving, absence of ovarian activity, and reduced conception rates.
  • Decreased milk production: the liver produces less glucose, which is essential for milk synthesis.
  • Increased incidence of diseases: higher susceptibility to ketosis (often related, with symptoms like appetite loss and an acetone smell on breath), acidosis, mastitis, and retained placenta.
  • Compromised immune system: a poorly functioning liver negatively impacts the animal’s ability to fight infections.

The clinical symptoms of fatty liver are often non-specific and difficult to detect, making it a “hidden threat.” Signs might include sluggish movements, reduced feed intake, and a drop in milk production. A definitive diagnosis requires a liver biopsy with microscopic analysis, although other blood tests (such as NEFA, bilirubin, and liver enzyme assessments) can support clinical suspicion.

 

 

 

Prevention and treatment

Prevention is the most effective and economical strategy. Key practices include:

  • Nutritional management: ensure a balanced, high-energy diet, especially during the transition period. It’s crucial to avoid over-conditioning cows during the dry period and promote good dry matter intake before and after calving.
  • Specific nutrient supplementation:rumen-protected choline is a fundamental nutrient that helps mobilize fats from the liver to other tissues or the mammary gland, preventing their accumulation and promoting the restoration of liver function. Supplementation with methionine and betaine can also aid in the prevention and treatment of hepatic steatosis.
  • Stress reduction: manage environmental factors like overcrowding to minimize stress, which can worsen negative energy balance.
  • Inflammation prevention: reducing postpartum inflammation reduces the risk of fatty liver by ameliorating the energy utilization of the post-calving cow.
