Ketosis in ruminants: what is it, causes, symptoms, prevention

What is ketosis?

Ketosis is a metabolic state characterized by elevated levels of ketone bodies in the blood, milk, or urine. These ketone bodies (mainly beta-hydroxybutyrate -BHBA-, acetoacetate, and acetone) are produced when the cow’s body breaks down fat for energy due to insufficient glucose availability. Ketosis typically occurs during the transition period, in particular at the onset of milk production when energy demands are highest.

There are two forms of ketosis:

  • Clinical ketosis: exhibits clear symptoms such as reduced appetite, decreased milk production, weight loss, and lethargy.
  • Subclinical ketosis: no obvious symptoms but detectable through biochemical tests; it can still negatively impact production and health.

 

Causes of ketosis

  • High energy demand: early lactation requires large amounts of energy for milk synthesis.
  • Insufficient feed intake: reduced appetite around calving decreases energy intake.

  • Early diagnosis: use blood or milk ketone testing to detect subclinical cases.
  • Prompt treatment: administer glucose precursors or other veterinary-recommended therapies when needed.
